The Hardest Vote by George Packer
Snodgrass sat down at my table and refused the offer of a soft drink. She was wearing a drab ensemble of gray cotton sweatpants and a loose-fitting pale-yellow knit top, and her brown hair fell in bangs just above her eyes. I asked for her thoughts about the Presidential […]

The wars of John McCain  by Jeffrey Goldberg
John McCain believes the Vietnam War was winnable. Now he argues that an Obama administration would accept defeat in Iraq, with grave costs to American honor and national security. Is McCain’s quest for victory a reflection of an antiquated pre-Vietnam mind-set? Or of a commitment to principles we […]

Russia remains a Black Sea power by M K Bhadrakumar

Georgia and the push for cold war by David Bromwich

John McCain said it first: “In the 21st century nations don’t invade other nations.” George W. Bush said it, too: Russia’s way is not the “way to conduct foreign policy in the 21st Century”. And Condoleezza Rice on August 19 said it: “Russia is a state […]

Unconventional wisdom by Henry A. Kissinger

Bad Cow Disease by Paul Krugman
Lately, however, there always seems to be at least one food-safety crisis in the headlines — tainted spinach, poisonous peanut butter and, currently, the attack of the killer tomatoes. The declining credibility of U.S. food regulation has even led to a foreign-policy crisis: there have been mass demonstrations in South […]

The coming energy wars by Rana Foorohar
A year ago no one was talking about $200 oil, and now everyone in the markets is, for scary reasons. Oil prices climbed from $10 in 1999 to $95 last year without slowing the surging world economy, in large part because the markets believed the spike was at core […]

Pogajanja med Gazpromom in Ukrajino so propadla. Od polnoči bo Gazprom prenehal dobavljati plin. Če bo Ukrajina zaradi tega začela porabljati plin namenjen naprej v Evropo, bo to zadeve še zapletlo.
Novo leto, nova plinska vojna. ------------------------------------------

Medtem ljudje v Gazi še naprej trpijo pomanjkanje, ko so zaprti v ogromno koncentracijsko taborišče. Sankcij proti državi Izrael ni pričakovati.

The Arab-Israeli Conflict: Too Complicated For Our Beautiful Minds There are so many words written about the "root causes" of the Arab-Israeli conflict, you might think the underlying issue is difficult to understand. But you'd be wrong. For all the mythology that interested parties want to wrap this conflict in, it's really not difficult at all to understand the confrontation that has been going on in Palestine for more than a century now. All you have to do is try to imagine that what happened to Palestine happened instead here in the U.S. Then ask yourself, “What would Americans do in this position?”. And at that point, you find it miraculously stops being difficult to understand. ------------------------------------------
Green Zone Handed Off With Little Fanfare
The handover of the Green Zone from U.S. to Iraqi control Thursday presented such a powerful symbol of the waning American presence in Iraq that it would have been nearly impossible for both sides not to mark it with a formal ceremony. They did, but the ceremony wasn't much. A podium was set up in the middle of a dirty street. Five small balloons and some tinsel decorated a seating area. The American ambassador and the top commander of U.S. troops didn't show up. Neither did Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. --------------------------------------
As Taliban nears Kabul, shadow gov't takes hold
Two months ago, Mohammad Anwar recalls, the Taliban paraded accused thieves through his village, tarred their faces with oil and threw them in jail. The public punishment was a clear sign to villagers that the Taliban are now in charge. And the province they took over lies just 30 miles from the Afghan capital of Kabul, right on the main highway. --------------------------------------
    A New New Deal?
When Richard Nixon announced that we are all Keynesians now, stagflation was confounding liberal economists, and conservatives were about to take over the commanding heights. Similarly, when Bill Clinton announced that "the era of big government is over," economic conservatism was about to take us off the cliff. Now "the era of big government is over" is over.
