Je ljudstvu vredno zaupati? Je tega zaupanja sploh vredno? Je povprečni Janez dovolj razgledan, dovolj sposoben doumeti vse kar se godi okoli njega, pripravljen žrtvovati nekaj kratkoročnega dobička za dolgoročni uspeh? Je za tega Janeza bolje, če je svoboden pri odločanju o produktih njegovega dela, ali je bolje, da zanj skrbi neka razsvetljena elita?

To je eno izmed temeljnih vprašanj, ki se postavljajo vsakemu, ki bi rad kdaj prilezel malo višje in spremenil svet. Odgovor na to vprašanje določa, koliko svobode bo dopuščal ljudstvu.

V praksi lahko to opazujemo na primeru Lizbonske pogodbe, ki so jo s svojim ne torpedirali Irci. Bili so edina država znotraj bloka 27 držav, ki so jim vladajoči dovolili, da so se lahko udeležili referenduma o tako pomembni temi. Za vse druge so se menili odločiti kar parlamentarci. Vprašati se moramo, ali mar ti ljudje ne zaupajo svojim državljanom, da se bodo odločili prav?
